Skype, unlike most IM/VoIP applications, is a peer-to-peer application. This means that you never connect to a Skype server; you connect directly to another Skype users’ computer. This seems to be rather random, so you could quite easily be connected to someone around the world, although I most times get connected to a USA cable user.
Now, you don’t get connected to just anyone, you get connected to ’supernodes’. Supernodes are just regular Skype clients that have been promoted to Supernode (server) status. This promotion happens automatically if you don’t have a firewall and your PC is online for a few days without rebooting.
There is no real way to know if you are considered a supernode BUT if you log off Skype or rarely use it you will not be made a supernode,
